I woke up in the dead of night,
stood up and went outside
and stared into the rain and the unblinking city lights.
It was so cold my hands went numb,
my fingertips turned white;
but for an instant all I thought was
Eliot was right.
Everyone's alone.
I guess all we really do is fight
for one hand to hold yours just right
to hold you together.

though... I'm still confused about this Eliot-figure that keeps popping up.

Shouldn't "instance" be "instant" though?
